General Information

General Information
An Iowa Bonus Board was established by legislation in 1921, with four members; namely, the Auditor of the State, Treasurer of State, the Adjutant General of the American Legion. Other appointments were granted by legislation in payment of World War II, Korean and Vietnam Service Compensation (bonus).
In July 1978, the Iowa Legislature repealed the Bonus Board. The Iowa Legislature established an Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, with five commissioners appointed by the Governor of Iowa; one of each from the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, American Veterans (AMVETS) and one appointment at large The Commission appoints their director and administrative staff. The state government reorganized in 1986 and placed the renamed Veterans Affairs Division under the Department of Public Defense. The Commission is an advisory body with no change in appointment criteria. The Director was given the title "Administrator" and is appointed by the Governor.
Each of our 99 counties within Iowa has a County Commission of Veterans Affairs. Their respective County Board of Supervisors appoints three members to the Commission, each being a wartime veteran. This totals 297 commissioners. In 66 counties there are paid directors, appointed by their commission. It is our pleasure to work closely with these county officials annually.
We maintain some 570,000 military records of wartime veterans from Iowa, coupled with a growing graves registration record system that has some 289,000 deceased burial records on file, and 59,000 copy VI of DD Form 214's for Iowa. These will grow annually.
