Social Security
Lunning Chapel will file a death notice with
Social Security soon after the
death of an individual. This notice will stop the monthly Social
Security check. If the notice is too near the end of the month
then writing deceased across the check envelope and returning
it to the US Post Office or notifying the bank if the check is
direct deposited will be necessary.
The rule for keeping the SS's monthly
allowance
is; if the deceased died after 12:00 AM on the first day of the
month you may keep it, if not it must be returned.
The spouse or children should notify
the Social Security Administration either at the local office,
3012 Division St., Burlington. IA 52601, telephone number
319-752-6322 or at the national toll free number 1-800-772-1213.
This call will change a spouses benefits or obtain benefits for
minor children.
Social Security pays a death benefit of
$255.00 to a spouse or minor children. If the deceased does not
have a spouse or minor children a death benefit will
not be available.
