How Did We Do?

Margaret Marna Jeanne (Mills) Scott, 96, of Burlington died peacefully in her sleep in Friday, March 17, 2017, at New London Specialty Care where she was temporarily staying while recovering from the flu. A memorial service will be held at Lunning Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2017.
Marna was born April 22, 1920 to Fred P. Mills and U. Erma White Mills. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1938, attended Knox College (Galesburg, IL), and graduated from Brown's Business College (Galesburg, IL) in 1941. On May 22, 1945 she was united in marriage to Chester Anthony Scott in Burlington, IA. She worked at the Iowa Ordnance Plant, National Research, and as a journeyman printer with The Hawk Eye newspaper, retiring in April 1990.
Music was one of Marna's great loves. She sang with the Silver Singers for several years and supported the Civic Music Association and Southeast Iowa Symphony. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to share this love as they joined vocal and instrumental groups in high school, college, military, church and other musical groups, attending as many of their performances as possible. Other interests included dancing, reading, card games, genealogy, history, government and politics.
She was also active in other civic groups including Knox College Fifty-Year Club; Delta Zeta Sorority, Alpha Iota Sorority, and a former member of Burlington Typographical Union #75, Rebeka Circle of King's Daughters, Des Moines County Genealogical Society, Des Moines County Historical Society, League of Women Voters, Fulton County, IL Genealogical and Historical Society, YWCA Queenagers, R.S.V.P. Silver Singers, and Carthage Lake Club.
Survivors include two sons, Kenton M. (Sandra) of Punxsutawney, PA and David A. (special friend Marcia Korb) of Burlington, IA; two daughters, Sherril A. (Walter) Ertz of Cedar Falls, IA and Christine K. (Roger) Callaway of West Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Cam Scott of Withee, WI; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; special friend, Forrest Barton; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chester in 1994, her parents, brother Fred Jr. in infancy, son Gregory, one step-grandchild and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, March 27th, at Lunning Chapel.
The funeral service for Mrs. Scott will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28th, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Marshall Jackman officiating. Interment will be St. Mary's Cemetery, Kingston.
Friends are invited to call at the house after the interment.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Burlington Municipal Band or the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra are encouraged.

Marna has been a friend to our Dad, Forrest Barton, since grade school and to our Mom since Browns Business College. Many stories have been told about both families over the years. She will be missed by this Barton family! Our prayers are with the Scott family!
