Gertrude “Gertie” Frances Calhoun, 101, of Donnellson, Iowa and formerly of Burlington, died at 11:05 p.m. Saturday, September 15, 2007, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

            Born December 7, 1905 in rural West Point, Iowa, she was the daughter of Luther and Elizabeth Herrmann Denney.   On October 31, 1929 she married Albert R. “Bert” Calhoun in Fort Madison, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on July 10, 1968.

            Gertie and Bert operated Ideal Bicycle and Fix-It Shop for 22 years until 1970.  She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, Eagles Auxiliary, Moose Auxiliary, AARP, and Christian Service Circle.  She liked to eat pie, dance, be on the Mississippi river and be with family and friends.

            Survivors include two sisters, Helen Darrah of Burlington and Mable Koller of Donnellson; and nieces and nephews.

            Her husband, parents, one brother Phillip, two brothers in infancy and one sister in infancy preceded her in death.

            A memorial has been established for Zion United Church of Christ.
