Gladys Isabel Brandt, 102, of Burlington, died Sunday, March 11, 2007 at
Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mediapolis, Iowa. Born
January 29, 1905 she was the daughter of John Berryhill and Mollie
Bowman Leffler of rural West Burlington. She was a lifetime resident of
Des Moines County. On July 31, 1931, she married LeRoy William Brandt
in Monmouth, Illinois.
Mrs. Brandt was a 1923 graduate of Burlington High School. She taught
at Spring Creek, Hunter, and Buena Vista rural schools, and at St.
Patrick’s and St. Mary’s schools. She received a teaching certificate
from Iowa Wesleyan College. She retired in 1967, the same year her
husband retired from the CB&Q Railroad Shops in West Burlington.
She
was a member of the Des Moines County Retired Teachers Association and
the Burlington Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
She
was active within her church. She enjoyed playing bridge, scrabble and
playing the piano. She thoroughly loved teaching and enjoyed giving
piano lessons and taking care of her yard.
Survivors include two daughters, Irene Mollie Brandt of Bethesda,
Maryland and Judy Marlene (David) Amenell of West Burlington; one son,
Robert LeRoy (Carol) Brandt of rural Burlington; five grandsons, Dale
Brandt of Central City, Iowa, Richard Brandt of Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
Steve Brandt of Burlington, Mark Brandt of Lenexa, Kansas and Matt
Brandt of Des Moines, Iowa; one granddaughter, Barbara Heim of
Plattsmouth, Nebraska; two great grandsons, Austin Heim of Plattsmouth,
Nebraska and Kolton Brandt of Central City, Iowa; and one great
granddaughter, Alela Heim of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.
Her husband LeRoy preceded her in death on November 27, 1983. Also
preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters and five brothers.
