        A memorial has been established for the P.A.W. Animal Shelter in Fort Madison, Iowa

           

             Albert James Bednar, 85, of Burlington died at 3:38 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2008, at Great River Medical Center’s Klein Center.

            Born March 9, 1923 in Lovilia, he was the son of John and Mary Demchok Bednar.  On November 14, 1953 he married Vernal L. Bailey in Iowa City.  She preceded him in death on May 14, 1998.

            Mr. Bednar was a 1941 graduate of Lovilia High School.  He was a World War II Army veteran. 

            Mr. Bednar worked at Lehigh Leopold Furniture Company for 30 years, retiring in 1985.

            Mr. Bednar was a former member of the Eagles and the Moose.  He was an avid walker, loved to play BINGO, and sang tenor in a barbershop quartet.

            Survivors include two nieces, Donna Tessier-Leathers and Sharon (Ralph) Gard both of Burlington and one sister-in-law, Ethel Bednar of Burlington.

            His wife, parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.
