George William Alexander

George William Alexander, 84, of Burlington, died at 9:58 PM Sunday March 5, 2006 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.     

Born August 26, 1921 in Scottsville, New York, he was the son of the Rev. John Lee and Ivis Wood Alexander.  He married Dorothy Ellen Pearson of Ainsworth on December 20, 1941.

            George worked for General Electric Company for 36 years as application engineer in power systems, serving in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Chicago, Illinois; Schenectady, New York; Pittsfield, Massachusetts; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Burlington.  He was a Registered Professional Engineer by examination and earned his Bachelor of Arts in English and Physics from Iowa Wesleyan College and Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1949.  He wrote many technical papers and served as chairman of power transformer section of I.E.E.E. National Society.  George was a 50-year brother of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and Eta Kappa Nu Engineering Society.

            George was a member of First United Methodist Church and had been active with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.  He served three years of World War II with Naval Air Transport Command.

            He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ellen Alexander of Burlington; two daughters, Sharon (Jerry) Yarter of Chestertown, New York and Carol Alexander of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Ross Alexander of Burlington and Craig (Tammy) Alexander of What Cheer, Iowa; one brother, John Alexander of Waukegan, Illinois; one sister-in-law, Mary Ann Alexander of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; a niece in Maryland; and a nephew in Florida.

            His parents; sister, Janet Hanna of Pennsylvania; and brother, James Alexander, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin preceded him in death.

           A memorial has been established for United Methodist Men Freshman Scholarship Fund.
